When Life Feels Stuck: 5 Small Changes That Can Help You Move Forward

Feeling stuck doesn’t always mean that something is badly wrong. Sometimes, it simply means that the way you’ve been living, working or coping no longer fits where you are now.

You may know that you want something to change, but not know exactly what. Or you may know what needs to change but feel overwhelmed by the thought of making it happen.

The good news is that meaningful change rarely begins with one dramatic decision. More often, it starts with a few small, manageable steps.

  1. Notice what isn’t working

Before trying to fix everything, take some time to notice what is draining you, frustrating you or leaving you feeling dissatisfied.

Ask yourself: What would I like to feel different three months from now?

You don’t need to have the solution yet. Simply identifying what you want to change is a useful first step.

  2. Make the change smaller

When a goal feels overwhelming, we often put it off all together.

Instead of asking, How do I completely change my life?

Ask: What is one small thing I could do this week that would move me in the right direction?

Small changes are easier to begin - and much easier to repeat.

  3. Focus on what you can influence

There will always be things outside your control: other people, unexpected events. the past and sometimes even the circumstances you find yourself in.

Putting your energy into the things you can influence - your choices, boundaries, habits and responses - can help you feel more in control.

  4. Stop waiting for the perfect time

It is easy to tell ourselves we will make changes when life is quieter, when we feel more confident or when we have more motivation.

But the perfect time rarely arrives.

Often, changes come after we begin taking action, not before.

  5. Give yourself somewhere to start

You don’t need a perfect plan. You simply need a starting point.

Choose one thing that feels realistic and manageable. Try it, notice what happens, and adjust as you go.

Progress doesn’t need to be dramatic to be meaningful.

You don’t have to work it all out on your own.

Coaching can give you the space to step away from the busyness of everyday life, think about what you really want and work out practical steps towards making it happen.
